The steampunk musical about the sublime paralytic Apolinario Mabini and his struggles against the political problems during his time is set to rekindle the audience’s hearts once again as Tanghalang Pilipino re-stages Mabining Mandirigma: A Steampunk Musical on February 19 to March 13 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino.

The musical bagged numerous awards during the PHILSTAGE Gawad Buhay Awards 1025 (3d Quarter Citations) including Outstanding Costume Design, Outstanding Choreography for a Play or Musical, Outstanding Musical Direction and Original Musical Composition, Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Musical, among others.

Here are some of the reviews about the steampunk musical:

“…“Mabining Mandirigma” proves to be a tour de force with its poetic text, fantastic costumes, a stage design that works perfectly with the lighting and the video projection, and an ensemble of powerful and empathic voices.-Rome Jorge, The Philippine Daily Inquirer

“The musical respectfully depicts the mind and passion behind Apolinario Mabini and while the title role is played by a female actor Delphine Buencamino, she does it so well that viewers invariably get used to the idea, their interest soon focused on what is happening.”-Mario A. Hernando, The Philippine Star

“MABINING MANDIRIGMA was a new musical that surprised us as it took pride in its creativity and form. Needless to say, that I got a glimpse of Broadway this-and-that (Les Miz, Wicked, Peter Pan, etc.), but I couldn’t care less. Tangahalang Pilipino took such risk, and the experience was all worth while…”-Orly Agawin, The Jellicle Blog

Broadway Music on Spotify

We all know that Spotify is a haven for music lovers, right? I mean, a cornucopia of songs from almost all genres are stored in this app. Even Broadway songs! Yep, the official Broadway cast recordings (OCBR) of our fave musicals can be searched and listened to. Gone are those days when we feel that being a musical theater lover is way too pretentious and yes…geeky.

So, here’s the list of OCBRs that get me through the day. I hope you get the time to listen to them too, you Broadway musical buffs, you!

1. Hamilton ocbr1

Hamilton is a musical with music, lyrics, and book by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The show was inspired by the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton, by historian Ron Chernow.

The musical made its Off-Broadway debut at The Public Theater in February 2015, where its engagement was sold out.[1] The show transferred to Broadway that summer, opening on August 6, 2015 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. On Broadway, it has received enthusiastic critical acclaim and unprecedented advance box office sales.

The off-Broadway production of Hamilton won the 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical as well as seven other Drama Desk Awards out of 14 total nominations. (wikipedia.com)
